Carcassone is a great game. After you have played it a few times you pick up on the pretty basic rules. Strategy is involved, so I only recommend it for 12+ yr olds, but younger can play if they can pay attention for about an hour.Easy rules, fun game, changes with every new person you play with.

Great Game
Michele Calamia from White Lake, MI - 5 out of 5.
Our son bought this game and my husband and I started playing it one day...I think we played 15 games that day. Once you get the hang of it the games only take about 30-40 minutes to play. The tiles and wooden pieces are very well made.0 people voted this review as helpful and 0 people voted this review as unhelpful.

I love this game.At first, I wasn't sure I'd like the game because I was used to Settlers of Catan, and believe it to be the best game ever. Well, I still love Settlers, but I also like this game now. I play it as much as Settlers, in fact, because it's a slightly faster going game.

If you like puzzles, then this game is for you :)
Ryan M. Kane from Good 'ol US of A - 5 out of 5.
Great for children and adults, because the rules are easy to learn and plus the game does not take too long to play.I am a great "Settlers of Catan" fan, but there have been times when 2 players was a problem. This game is great, because "Carcassonne" is fast-paced and exciting. There is so much to this all-so-simple game. I recommend buying "Inns and Cathedrals" and "Traders and Builders" if you really enjoy the "Base Game."
P.S: The version that I received came with the "River I Expansion" - Free of charge :)

Family fun for 2 to 5 players
B. Murray Wall from Riverview, FL - 5 out of 5.
Carcassone is a game of arranging tiles to create cities and surrounding areas. It is an expandable game with each expansion containing easily distinct tiles to facilitate changing number of players. Younger players with less strategy skills can play and enjoy the game by choosing where to place their tiles. At the same time players with more strategies may be either challenged or assisted by their choices. Every game is made different by the number of players and the choices of tiles.0 people voted this review as helpful and 0 people voted this review as unhelpful.

A Simple Yet Enriching Gaming Experience
ONENEO from Buffalo, NY - 4 out of 5.
Sometimes you can feel the hype surrounding a game long before you ever play it. Such was the case with Carcassonne, a staple among Rio Grande's catalog since the year 2000 and a game that has spawned literally dozens of expansions and spin-offs. If all of these facts weren't quite enough to hint toward a winner, the game comes decorated with a host of awards it managed to earn along its storied decade of existence.Written originally by Klaus-Jurgen Wrede, Carcassonne originally came into being in Germany by a firm called Hans Im Gluck and like most Rio Grande Games, was translated into English and reintroduced to the North American market shortly thereafter. The illustration credit goes to Doris Matthaus and Jay Tummelson rounds out the roster as the man behind the English translation.
Consisting merely of 84 cardboard land tiles, a single cardboard scoring track, 40 wooden pawns and a color rule sheet, I wasn't sure what to expect going in. It turns out that the reason for the game's near-legendary status among hardcore fans and casual gamers alike has more to do with simplicity in its game mechanics and a highly addictive formula that's nearly subliminal to learn but limited only to the imaginations of the players involved.
The system, which is deceptively simple, works like this: Players begin by shuffling then stacking the 83 land tiles then place the start tile in the center of the table. They then take turns drawing a tile from the stack and placing it immediately, in other words, no one ever has tiles in their hand. Laying the tiles is quite intuitive in nature as the only rules to follow are to make sure the roads connect. The strategy comes in the form of the scoring mechanic, which is derived at by when and where a player decides to place his pawns. Pieces in the city segments are labeled knights and score 2 points per tile, pieces on the roads become thieves and earn a single point per tile. Pawns placed in the cloister (monks) can earn 9 points and farmers can make oodles of points depending on how many nearby cities they supply with goods.
About the trickiest part is of course learning the scoring method/ point breakdowns (some pieces are scored immediately then the pawns returned to the player's inventory while others, like the farmers, aren't scored until the end of the round). The game comes to its conclusion once all of the tile pieces have been placed. Since there is an east-to-follow scoring card included, the need for a calculator or scratch paper is pretty much eliminated entirely.
Rounds take around 45 minutes but that time seems to decrease to closer to a half hour as players get into the swing of things. The recommended requirement of ages 8 and up seems pretty on par but, and as I've discovered is the case with many games, much of this has to do with the way the rules are presented in the book/ grasping the game for the first time. It would appear that teaching the game to others once an adult has a firm grasp on it could very well open up the game's playability to children of nearly all ages as the mechanics are brilliantly simplistic.
The art itself is nothing too fancy or elaborate, which most certainly contributes to the game's user-friendly charm. Pieces are all easy to identify and it really doesn't take long before the table is just completely occupied by sprawling cities and villages. An additional bonus to tile-laying games like this is that it is literally a new game each and every time it is played. Since there is no permanent game board, there are no patterns to learn or unfair advantages for veteran players over beginners.
In all, I find the game to be quite enjoyable and almost relaxing in its mechanic. Never does it feel like a direct competition between players so much as an opportunity to create various landscapes while earning points in the process. While the core game supports 2-5 players, this is one of few titles that can truly boast intuitive couple-play. In other words, playing with just one other person never feels like a scaled down version of the "real" experience.
Like so many timeless classic board games before it, Carcassonne's greatest strength and most enduring attribute would have to be its clever simplicity. It can be enjoyed by players of nearly any age and level of experience, doesn't grow old quickly, and offers up enough strategy to keep players coming back for more. It's hard to imagine a more successful formula than that!

Fun Strategy Game
Aaron Mcbride from California - 5 out of 5.
I like that Carcassonne doesn't take too long to play, and that you have to think about what the other players are doing as much as what you're doing. The board tiles are made out of sturdy card board with a nice finish, so they should hold up for a while (although, it would be nice if they were plastic so they would last even longer).0 people voted this review as helpful and 0 people voted this review as unhelpful.
Don't judge this book by its cover.
Game Fan from Harrisburg, PA - 5 out of 5.
Give this game a chance and odds are it'll win you over. Initial responses range from it looks too complicated, to board games take forever, and I don't like nerdy Dungeons and Dragons type games. Fortunately none of these assumptions are correct. The truth is that the game is easy enough for people of any age to understand after playing once or twice. Usual playing time is between a half hour and an hour depending on how seriously the players take the game, and it doesn't have anything to do with Dungeons and Dragons.
What this game suffers from is poor marketing. The unusual German name and fantasy world cover art portray this game as something it is not. When in reality it is something that everyone who has taken the time to give it a chance has really enjoyed.

Almost Candy Land -- sorry Carcassonne
Zimy from Washington, DC - 1 out of 5.
To preface, this is the first time a product on Amazon has ever moved me to review it. I am a fairly avid gamer -- not a hard-core gaming geek -- but I think a lot about games and have designed a few myself.Over the course of 4 days, I played this game about 20 times. Carcassonne comes off as interesting. The premise is good, the rules a easy to learn, and there is without a doubt a lot to think about. The limitation on the number of pieces you can use is the big key to game, followed closely by strategic placement of tiles. The games are fairly quick, and you can occasionally have fun working together & trying not to cheat each other in games with multiple players.
The bad: way too much luck & not enough strategy. This is not quite Candy Land, but it is closer than it first appears. In most games, the value of City tiles can be disproportionately high. In a random distribution over time, drawing tiles in multiple games will level this out. But in a given game, it can make all the difference -- and usually does.
Why I gave this game 1 star: Even if each player plays with the best strategy available to place a given tile (which starts happening pretty quickly since the rules & strategy are easy to learn), there is no way to beat the player who happens to draw the best tiles. In short, once everyone knows how the game works, you are just going through the motions of trying not to screw up in a game with a pre-determined result -- ick.
That is about the harshest possible criticism of any game I think of . . . sorry Carcassonne. Play Dominion, Settlers of Catan, or even Set instead.

Easy to learn, but never gets boring
Eric J Kline - 5 out of 5.
The rules are easy to learn, but the strategy is ever evolving. Mom 60 year old mom, and 11 year old niece both enjoyed playing this with us. The game is very well balanced, and you can influence who you help (this is nice if you're playing with kids). It's a great lesson in resource planning, and employing your assets wisely in order to have the best return.0 people voted this review as helpful and 0 people voted this review as unhelpful.
Good all-around game
S. Bullen - 5 out of 5.
I bought this game for my husband and I to play while we're living abroad. It's a great game for us and our guests because it is not dependent on language. But beyond that, it also is a great game for mixed age groups -- it's not too simple that it's boring for the older players and it's not too complicated that younger players can't join in.
The best aspects of the game, as other reviewers have mentioned, is that it is a mixture of skill and luck. Rather than spend hours and hours losing a game despite your best strategies (I'm looking at you, Risk), this game rewards you for your tactics.
I also like that the game is different every time you play, so it never gets old.
I highly recommend this game for anyone and everyone!

Wow, am I glad I bought this game! It is the best two-person game out there, in my opinion. It's different every time, and the length of the game is just right. 30 to 45 minutes without extension packs. Quite easy to learn, too! Love it!!0 people voted this review as helpful and 0 people voted this review as unhelpful.
Solid fun for game-loving families
William Mitchell from Sterling, VA - 4 out of 5.
Like it's earlier predecessor (The Settlers of Catan), the Carcassonne game brings hours of family fun - but the randomness of the map that is organically created means that each game is different. For younger players, the game lends itself well towards increasing levels of complexity - which is welcome when not trying to overwhelm them.
The expansion packs, while interesting and entertaining, sometimes don't the same thrill of the original game itself.
While this game can be played 'cut-throat' -- with the players actively trying to "steal" eachother's towns or roads, it's definitely a playing technique that should be only introduced after the players are all experienced with the game mechanics.
I've seen this game played by ages 7 and up (with some coaching)

Fun and easy to play
Brett Conley from UT United States - 5 out of 5.
This is a great game. We gave it to my 12-year-old for Christmas and he likes it, too. What I like about it is that it's so simple to set up, play, and clean up, but it's still a lot of fun. The game length is more or less pre-determined, so you always know what kind of time committment you're looking at (you play until the tiles are all used). And there are so many ways for all the tiles to fit together, so a few times playing the game does not give you a huge advantage over newbies. Also, there are a fixed number of each type of tile, so it gives the game that sort of strategic prediction angle like dominoes. And it's great for 2 people. But it works just as well for 3 or 4.0 people voted this review as helpful and 0 people voted this review as unhelpful.
Great fun for whole family
Brian Legare from Appleton, WI United States - 5 out of 5.
This is an engaging game that our whole family (boys 9, 13, and 15 yrs old plus mom and dad) enjoys. The rules and concept are easy to learn (10 - 15 minutes). The game is challenging yet not frustrating.Game play consists of players picking one tile each turn and placing it alongside other tiles to create an ever growing map (area) of roads, cities, cloisters and farms. Each player has seven "followers" (small wooden people) that can be used to claim these elements. Players score points for completed elements (e.g. when a road has two ends or intersections, a city has a wall all they way around it, etc.). Refreshingly, there are no dice, cards, spinners or traditional game boards.
The game tiles are thick and well made as are the followers. I can easily see taking this game traveling, camping, backpacking, etc. It would be easy to pack. A flat stable surface approximately 2'x2' is required and you definitely could not play while in a vehicle. When camping I would play on a picnic table, standard foam pad or Thermarest.
This is a game of subtle strategy and chance. It moves along quickly, easily being completed in 45-60 minutes. Players do not have "hands" (e.g. sets of tiles they hold), introducing the element of chance. Throughout the game it is never crystal clear who is in the lead. In our family, any player is as likely to win as the next although some win more than others. Elements of strategy and chance are nicely balanced in this game.
Critical thinking skills are required to decide where to place each tile, when to use your followers, how big to make a city, which direction to route a road, etc.
This is a great game that is well worth the price.

Best Game We Own. Period.
JR from USA - 5 out of 5.
This is the best game we own. Period. From our 8 year old son, to my 60 year old Dad, this is *the* game everyone yearns to play. The gameplay is simple, making it easy for kids to play, but the strategic possibilities are large, allowing exciting gameplay among adults.
One last thing: for parents out there, did I mention it is educational too? This is somewhat surprising to many (as one can tell from the low educational value marks given by a lot of reviewers), probably because it is so interesting and fun that it doesn't feel like you are learning anything. But you do! Every aspect of the game requires subtle spacial thinking abilities. Wether it be processing the extends of a field so you can count the cities touching it, or just picturing where your tile can fit in the board, kids (and even adults) will build neural pathways for better spatial thinking and pattern recognition.
The last thing I would say is about expansions: Some expansions are really good, and some just suck. Definitely buy the Inns & Cathedrals expansion pack. It should have been a core part of the game, but alas, it wasn't. I would also recommend that, after some time mastering the game, you buy the Traders & Builders expansion pack (as it changes and extends the strategy used in building cities in a good way). I also found the Siege & Cults mini-pack to be quite fun!

GREAT FUN TO PLAY
Bishonbabs from Beavercreek, Ohio - 5 out of 5.
I bought this as a gift for my adult daughter and we have had great fun playing it as a family. There is some strategy to the game, but it is not hard to play. my 72 year old mother in law loves to play it too. One takes turns placing game pieces to form castles and roads and obtains points for roads and castles completed. There are several expansion packs that you can purchase in addition which adds fun to the game and takes it in a new direction.1 people voted this review as helpful and 0 people voted this review as unhelpful.

Gregory B. Garber from Los Angeles, CA, USA - 5 out of 5.
This is a simple and straightforward game that can be played with two people. I love the last part since most strategy games require 3 or more, so this makes the game even more compelling. The money spent on Carcassone is a far better deal than dropping $30+ for two see a movie at the theatre. new city each game
Sally from Maryland - 5 out of 5.
Our family with teens loves Carcassonne. Each game creates a different version of the city because you place the pieces as you play, so it's never the same arrangement. With many players, some get tired of waiting for their turn, so teams may be a good approach with 6 or more.1 people voted this review as helpful and 0 people voted this review as unhelpful.
This game is quick to learn, is lots of fun, and is appropriate for all ages!
Flash from Cleveland, OH USA - 5 out of 5.
Amazon has got to love me. I'm always searching for new things to read, watch, or play. And so while searching for a fun and interesting new board game, I came across both Carcassonne and The Settlers of Cataan. After some deliberation and research (see Wikipedia), I chose Carcassonne because it looked more visually appealing and because the rules seemed more interesting. Boy, did I make a good choice! This game is so easy to get the hang of. Basically, you score points by placing your "followers" on cities, cloisters, roads and farms. This is done as each turn, players place new land tiles to the game surface. Of course, there are certain conditions for placing your tiles and followers and you quickly see how strategies can be applied to take the best advantage of those conditions. The game was so easy to learn, that my daughters (ages 8, 11 and 13) quickly caught on. Within ten minutes, we were playing our first game.
As I said, the need for a strategy quickly becomes apparent, so Carcassonne becomes a thinking game as well. A game typically takes around a half-hour with this basic set.
Then finally, if you are like me, you start checking out the numerous expansions that are available for this game: Inns & Cathedrals, Traders & Builders, River II, just to namne a few. Each expansion provides additional tiles and/or rules that make the game even more fun and challenging to play. I'm hooked already.
One more thing: In my research, I discovered a website called CarcassonneCentral that was extremely helping getting started. They have a bbs were you can download reference materials (the rules do get more complex as you add expansions) and there is always someone who will answer a question you might have on the game or provide you with advice on which are the best expansions.
As I said, this is a game for all ages. I already enjoy playing it with my family, and I look forward to taking it to other family gatherings as well.

I recommend it for all ages (my mom is her late 50's and she enjoyed herself)
and actually the expansions are in my Christmas gift list :)

Amazingly fun, simple to learn and difficult to master
Allison M. Perkel from Boston - 5 out of 5.
Like many of the all time great games, Carcassonne is simply to learn, easy to play and difficult to master. Its so easy that the "cheat sheet" instructions fit on a page where half the page is a picture detailing how to score one of the more interesting methods of gaining points. At its heart, Carcassonne is a tile game, where the board is unique every time. As you lay down a tile, you get to decide if you want to place one of your citizenry there in order to score points. Points are scored for cities, roads, farms and cloisters. The person with the most points wins. It doesn't get much easier than that now does it?
This is where the fun begins; while you place that cloister there? Do you want to risk putting down a farm early or waiting for the right moment later in the game? How can you stage your grand finale and pull off a come from behind victory? Strategy and a quick mind are key to coming up with a winning plan.
Aside from being tons of fun, its also well constructed. The citizens are made of wood and the tiles are thick cardboard stock. This is a game built to last.
If you like games like Settlers of Catan, be sure to check out Carcassonne; you will not regret it!

Fun game
Philip M. Chute from 29 Palms, CA - 5 out of 5.
Love this game.First off, I'm 23, and I play with other people my age, no kids, so I can't say how well this fares as a kids game or family game, but it's simple enough that most kids should be able to play.
Secondly, I'm far from a geeky type gamer. I'm not at all into roleplaying games or heavy wargaming or anything, I just love casual simple games, which is what this is.
Thirdly, this game, although friendly and having a pleasent theme, is vicious. You can play it nicely and just build on your own cities and score points, or you can play coldly. You can steal other peoples cities, make it harder or imposible for people to finish cities and roads, and just generally screw your opponents over. There's a lot of swearing involved. So don't think that because it's a pleasent family type game that it's not competitive. But in a fun way. Because no one gets knocked out of the game or anything, it's always fun, even if you're losing.
Finally, the game is just great. It's simple enough that you can teach it in 5 minutes, you can play it half drunk, and you don't even need to constantly pay attention, meaning you can hold a conversation while you play. But be prepared for someone to step in and steal a city while you're not paying attention.
Definitely recomend this game for anyone.
Also, the expansions. I have the first 2 and never play with out them.
One final note, the game takes a lot of table space, so it's not a game to take in the car or anything, however, we took it camping and it worked out really well, on a picnic table and also on the floor of the tent. So it's portable in that sense.
In retrospect, it might have been better for me to get the Big Box they sell with the game plus expansions. If you think you'll like this game and the expansions, I'd recomend that. If you're not sure, just get this. It's great, I promise.

Fantastic game for all ages!
Eduardo from Southeast NY, USA - 5 out of 5.
Carcassonne is a fantastic board game that I've introduced to many different groups of people, and they all seem to easily understand and embrace the game, asking me when I'll bring it back to the table. It is very simple to learn, but the strategy of how to best place your tiles and use your wooden figures will keep you coming back for more. Hopefully my description will give you an idea of what the game is all about.Carcassonne is a 2-5 player game where you expand the city of Carcassonne by placing tiles and claiming various city "features" (cities, roads, cloisters, and farms) on these tiles using little wooden figures which represent your "followers". By claiming these features, building them further, and finally completing these features, you score points, and the player with the most points wins.
The game is really much more confusing on text. The rulebook was a little intimidating at first, but once I tried playing a test game with myself, I discovered how simple and exciting the game really was, and I was eager to share the experience with my friends. When I teach the game using the tiles as examples, my friends pick it up right away. The game experience as a whole mixes the excitement of competing against your friends with the fun of solving a puzzle, and playing with the little wooden figures adds that special touch that makes a game memorable.
To sum up the strategy involved: A nice person will leave the other players alone so he can build features on his own while they build theirs; but the clever player (aka, the one who usually wins), will not only build his own features, but build into the features of his opponents, gaining even more points while denying his opponents the advantage. The game is very versatile in that you can just have a free-for-all with one another; you can form teams, or you can even form makeshift alliances to gang up against the player who is winning. It's up to you and your opponents to decide which strategy is best.
Pros
-Versatile game that is easy and quick to explain after browsing the rulebook
-Easy to set up (you literally set it up by playing the game, other than handing out figures, shuffling the tiles, and placing the starting tile)
-Plays relatively quick - my games usually last about 30-45 minutes
-Good introductory game for people who aren't sure if they will enjoy strategy games
-Plays with two to five players, and is equally fun with the minimum or maximum
-Durable wooden figures and tiles (Don't let your baby suck on them, and they'll last for many years)
-Portable (doesn't take up too much space, and it's easy to fit expansions (sold separately) inside the original box
-IT'S FUN
Cons
- If you're looking for a deep, engrossing game to play with friends who are already experienced with strategy games, I would look elsewhere. This is more of a fun, light strategy game for everyone to play.
- Not for very small children, mostly because of the little wooden figures
You can't go wrong with this purchase if you're looking for a fun game to enjoy with everybody and anybody. It gave me an excuse to stop playing on the computer all the time, and instead sit down with friends and family and chat, while at the same time plotting my ultimate victory. Buy it!
P.S. If you find that you enjoy this game and want to change up the game from time to time, purchase an expansion, each of which costs about half the price of the base Carcassonne game. I would start with Inns and Cathedrals, and then move on to Traders and Builders (both are available on Amazon too). The two add great new strategies to the game and I love them both, and at the same time they're easy to learn and incorporate with the base game. I wasn't extremely impressed with the other expansions, but you can read the reviews on their respective web pages and decide for yourself if they're right for you and your group.

This game is great! There is not as much trading and "marketplace" type interactions in this game vs Settlers of Catan but it more than makes up for it with the variety of strategies that can be employed. I find this game especially fun with a close group of friends for a game night. It's not much of an icebreaker type game though since it is a little long (typical game lasts ~1 hr for 4 people). Excellent tile based game
Joel Smith from Southern California - 5 out of 5.
This is a fun game for kids and adults alike. It's a bit more complicated than your "classic" (Monopoly, not chess) board game, but the strategy and interaction that this complication enables makes this game a winner. The basic gameplay is simple: several tiles are turned face down, with some number of tiles turned up. On your turn, you pick up a face down tile, turn it face up, and place it next to any face up piece. Then you must decide if you want to claim a particular section of that tile (the field, or the road, or the city, or the church). Claiming a section can earn you points, but you only have a limited number of men to use! Each section on a piece is essentially an investment with some amount of risk. road are fairly low risk, with a fairly low investment time, but also a typically low payout. Cities are a higher risk, with higher payout, but a longer investment time. Churches and fields have their own risk vs reward as well.
Overall, a fun game, lasting about 45 minutes per session. Typical turn lenths are about 10-20 seconds long, and the limited number of expansions that I've tried have been nice additions as well. Great for both casual gamers and lighter fare for more serious gamers.

Great fun!
Mary L. Wenmark from Boston, MA - 5 out of 5.
I purchased Carcassonne for my 28 year old son for Christmas. We had a great time with it when he made it home in January to open his gifts. I'd love to buy one of the extensions, but need a suggestion as to which to buy first. I've also played it with friends my age as well as a 14 year old. Everyone loved it and we are all real game people, so this is truly a compliment.0 people voted this review as helpful and 0 people voted this review as unhelpful.
Simple and really fun game
Will Vasquez from San José, Costa Rica - 5 out of 5.
Carcassonne is an awesome gameI got excited with board games when I bought The Settlers of Catan, which is also a great game.
A friend recommended Carcassonne, and I am really thankful for that.
The game is really easy to play, with really simple rules, but it is different every time you play.
I play it mostly with my house mate, and the game is excellent for two people.
The only problem I found with the product is that, although it has "Ther River" expansion, there aren't any rules of how to use the river. I had to look for them in Internet.
But overall, the game is great. A must if you like board games (and even if you don't... yet)

Great game - playable for two
G. J. Healy from Phippsburg, ME - 5 out of 5.
My son received this game for the holidays. There were six of us playing it. Upon arriving home, my husband and I purchased it for ourselves. We did not know how it would be for only two players but it has been great. Every game is different and what worked in one game may not work in the next game to win. Great game.0 people voted this review as helpful and 0 people voted this review as unhelpful.
Carcassonne - Deceptively easy to learn
A. J. Mann from Michigan - 4 out of 5.
This is a game of strategy that is deceptively easy to learn but turns out to have some surprising complexity. New players and younger players can pick it up quickly and enjoy it right away. Older or more sophisticated players can get into some of the strategic nuances. Expansion packs are available to add more complexity as player skill evolves.2 people voted this review as helpful and 0 people voted this review as unhelpful.
great escape from video games
Timphoto from Leixlip, Ireland - 5 out of 5.
We played this game last year on vacation and had to get it for ourselves. I play with my two sons, 14 and 10, and it is competitive, challenging, and engaging enough where they sometimes choose it over video games. The dynamic nature of building a new board each time you play means that we don't just try to create a winning strategy, but we try to make a beautiful map as well. It is funny to see my 10 year old saying things like 'this time we can't have any straight roads'.
Gameplay is pretty quick and doesn't last more than an hour. We think it is great.

Good strategy game for parents to play with kids

I purchased this game as a Christmas present for my 11 year old son. My 8 year old daughter loves to play it with us also. My kids love to play games so this helps spice it up a bit. Good strategy game that doesn't take forever. Game play is about 45 minutes. Terrific 2-Person Game!!
J. Kunkel - 5 out of 5.
I'm not sure how much fun this game would be with more than two players, but it may be the best 2-person game I have ever played. The set up is simple and quick, the artwork is pretty, and it's really engaging/fun to play. I would recommend this game to anyone.1 people voted this review as helpful and 0 people voted this review as unhelpful.
A good game, but not as good as "Settlers of Catan."
Alan Holyoak from In the shadow of the Tetons - 4 out of 5.
This is a great game to introduce you to the world of gaming beyond board games like Hasbro The Game of Life and similar offerings. If you are no longer satisfied with that genre or level of game, then I highly recommend Carcassone.Carcassone is a tile-laying game. In this game players take turns drawing tiles at random and adding them to a growing medieval region called Carcassone. After you add a tile to the game you can play one of your seven "followers" so that it becomes a robber, a farmer, a knight, a monk, etc. You accumulate points as you complete towns you own, roads you control, monastaries you inhabit, and farms you have a farmer on.
The only element of chance in this game is in the tiles you draw. Once you have a tile in hand strategy comes into play. Plus, with only 7 followers, you have to decide where and when to play them.
You and up to 4 friends or family members can play at a time. The game rules suggest that this game is for players ages 10 and up, but one of our children is 9 and she was able to pick up the rules and do just fine (with only a small bit of help here and there at first).
All in all this is a solid game, the pices are durable, and should hold up for many, many playings. The game plays fairly quickly, sometimes taking less than 30 mins to play.
If you are just being introduced to gaming beyond Milton Bradley's traditional offerings you will probably consider this to be a 5-star game. If, however, you are an experienced gamer that enjoys games at least as complex as the The Settlers of Catan series, this game will seem kind of simple - enjoyable, but simple. For that reason I'm assigning only 4 stars overall for this game.
Oh, it also plays well as a 2-player game!

This is a good new board game
J. Woodley from Monument CO - 4 out of 5.
I was sceptical but this is a really fun new game. You certainly have to spend some time on learning the rules but it is worth doing. There is just enough thinking to be entertaining. I suspect that some people really put heavy thought into strategy. But, we just enjoy ourselves with a little bit of thought. My 11 year old doesn't like something too heavy. A good purchase.0 people voted this review as helpful and 0 people voted this review as unhelpful.
Great game for the whole family
Peter Anderson from Shakopee, MN, USA - 5 out of 5.
I was introduced to Carcassonne a few weeks ago because it was available for download for free on Xbox live for the xbox 360. I downloaded the game and played it constantly for a couple of weeks and really enjoyed the strategy of the game, as well as the fact that you could play a game in a relatively short time.I then played the physical board game version with some friends, and enjoyed that even more. There's just something to having the actual pieces in your hand!
The game involves strategy, competition, luck and is a ton of fun! You'll be gloating when you steal a competitor's castle. Crying when you realize that you lost the game because you had too few farms.
Great game, and it only usually takes 30-45 minutes to play.

Fun, and easy to learn
Lady of Winterfell from Tucson, AZ - 5 out of 5.
This game is quite fun to play, and you can play it many times, as the game changes each time you play. There is a small amount of strategy involved, but not too much to daunt those who don't enjoy strategy games (like myself.) It is great for 2 players, although I have yet to play it with more than that, but I can imagine it would be quite fun with more than 2 players as well. It is pretty easy to learn, and the gameplay can last between 30-45 minutes per game.I would highly recommend this game to anyone looking for a fun game that can be played with 2 players, and can also be played numerous times. (this was our criteria when looking for a game.)

My husband bought Carcassonne for us to play as a family with our 8 yr old son. We all love it - including my inlaws! We've played it every day since we got it. We love that it is simple, without a lot of pieces and a game can be played within an hour. Our son loves it, has taught a friend how to play and they have learned a lot about logic and strategy.0 people voted this review as helpful and 0 people voted this review as unhelpful.
Buy this game!
Chillin' Out - 5 out of 5.
This is another huge hit in my house. The age guideline says 10 and up, but my 6 and 9 year old love this game. We got it this past summer and my son played it at 5.5 yrs. old without trouble. I was even surprised that he totally understood the strategy in the game when he would put pieces down.It is a fairly complex game to learn the first few times you play. If we haven't played it for a few weeks I'll pull out the instructions again to refresh myself. It also has a quick-reference sheet which is very handy. However once you learn it it's not as complicated as it originally seemed. To make it easier at first, play without the river pieces. My son doesn't need help at all to play.
The tiles are quite thick and sturdy and the men are wood so very durable, however like any game, you'll want to be careful not to lose the pieces as there are a lot.
We also bought the Traders and Builders add-on that adds more tiles, more people to play with, and some new twists on the game. My kids like the add-on as well, and the bag for the tiles that came with it is VERY good to have to plop all the pieces in to prevent peeking or losing the tiles.

Fun game for whole Family
Sharon Williams from AL, USA - 4 out of 5.
Carc is a relatively easy game to understand and learn. I am a big fan of games with a quick spin up time but that aren't so easy as to have no staying power. Carc definitely has staying power while being a game that the whole family can enjoy. My youngest is 12. She, along with her 14 yrs old sister and 16 yrs old brother, enjoys the game and, since her mother and I also enjoy it, the game is one of the "winners" in our house. We started off with the 6 player expansion but didn't play with farmers as that complicates the game quite a bit for starting players. But after a couple of sessions or 2 adding in farmers . . and then Inns and Cathedrals . . . helps "expand" the game and give Carcasonne that all important staying power.

4 stars instead of 5 only because boyfriend enjoys it too much
J. Ross from USA - 4 out of 5.
I read a lot of really positive reviews about this game. I was searching for a 2-player game and decided on Carcasonne - what a great choice! Very interesting, fun game that is never the same twice! Only reason I gave it 4 stars is that my boyfriend likes to play WAY too much and it can get repetitive after awhile. Once you play a few times and get the idea (and strategy) of the game it is addicting! I highly recommend for people looking for a different type of game - not like a regular board game - and who are up for something new. This is a great 2 player game but it can also be played with up to 3 more people. I haven't tried the expansions yet but with how popular this game now is in our household I'm sure we'll be buying some soon!1 people voted this review as helpful and 1 people voted this review as unhelpful.

Tile placement king!
Peter J. Mateja from Madison, WI United States - 4 out of 5.
Carcassonne really is the king of tile placement games. Ripe with strategic and tactical elements, driven by the randomness of tile drawing, this game can be incredibly competitive. Yet, even when losing, I've always enjoyed the kind of table talk Carcassonne inspires.Another recommendation: For those in the mood for something even lighter and quicker than Carcassonne, I'd suggest the game Fjords (just do an Amazon search in games.)

I was introduced to Carcossonne by a friend one evening. It's amazing just how much fun you can have without the TV or the computer. This is a great game for two to five people. I've played it with fellow adults and with my niece and nephew (age 8 and above) and all have wanted to play another game, once we finished the first. I highly recommed this game for the strategy, non-violence, uniqueness of each game and overall fun.1 people voted this review as helpful and 0 people voted this review as unhelpful.
Great, Great Board Game
DaliDrama from Los Angeles, CA - 5 out of 5.
I bought this game not knowing anything about it: I was looking for a new board game and wanted something new and best of all - GOOD. So I researched which games one board game of the year and took a gander at Carcasonne. When it arrived, it took a few tries to learn it on my own and appreciate what it was. It has tiles and pieces - no board. After learning how the game works, my obsession and appreciation only grew. The tiles are placed one by one to create the board of the game (or map). From there, players add their pieces to the map and try and gain control over roads and castles, etc. Each player places one tile at a time (drawn by luck) but the knowledge of gameplay ads a strategy to the game, which is great. This is a fun, interactive game that allows you to play a fun game, while also building a map and creating your own environment at the same time. Anyone who enjoys sim-city will be instantly addicted to this game, but the creation aspect is not the main aspect of the game.
And best of all, there are countless expansion packs, giving you more tiles and more ways to earn points and play the game. So far I bought 3 expansions and will most likely buy more in the future. This box allows five people and other expansion packs give you more pieces. Others give you new spins and takes and forces you to keep in mind the different rules in order to advance. Great game!

Fun for two
Michael P. Daugherty from Boston, MA USA - 5 out of 5.
When we're a little tired or don't feel like going out, this game is the first thing my girlfriend and I reach for.I've only had it for a little while, so I don't know how it is with more people, but with two, it can be fairly strategic without being overwhelming for non-gamers. I'd imagine with more there would be more competition and cooperation for various points, since there would be more meeples per square. With two people, there was some (primarily trying to block someone from completing a city so that they'd get fewer points and they wouldn't be able to reuse their meeple, or connecting farms strategically so that we could get as many points per farmer as possible), but for the most part, if someone was the first to claim a city, etc., we pretty much gave it to them.

Fun for thinkers
Railfarmer from Virginia - 3 out of 5.
I bought this for the family to play and I (Dad) love to play it on a lazy/quiet day. It is not much fun for parties. My wife thinks it is tedious but she does not care for strategy games in general (she prefers Uno). My nine year old daughter plays it with me and she enjoys it. My daughter (as other parents have mentioned about their children) does not do farmers for two reasons: farmers are just complicated enough that she avoids the concept plus she is very sensitive about not running out of followers and very much understands that farmers once placed are not recoverable until the game ends. For this reason I tend to outscore her handily (fortunately for me she understands that the farmer issue is why I always win but she loves to play strategy games with Daddy and she is closing the scoring gap over time). This game is not a "hoot" nor is it quickly paced. It is more of a moderate intensity strategy game. It is not however an overly complicated game that is hard or boringly slow to play. It is both easy enough that truly anyone could play (and enjoy) it yet engaging enough that serious thinkers can have fun with it.
This game does take up an entire dinette table to play and is not suitable for playing in the car for example. We put it in our RV and play it whenever we are camping. It is perfect for that.

Very good game
History Professor - 5 out of 5.
This is one of the best games I own, certainly in the top three (among dozens). You build the "board" by players drawing tiles and placing them (according to simple rules) next to tiles that have already been played. It is an easy game to learn, but allows for a lot of long-term development in thinking up new stragegies for winning. The only thing that could get fuzzy was where the extent of a farm (one type of land that a player can lay claim to) extends to, though newer versions usually have the river tiles included to make this less an issue.
There are many, many expansion sets, allowing players to vary the game if they ever get bored with the original (though that's not likely). Some of the expansions are interesting, nonetheless, though others seem not to add much. (I think the Tower expansion is the best, and Inns and Cathedrals is quite strong. I like the Princess and the Dragon expansion the least.) The other good thing is that, depending on the size of your group and your attention span, using or not using various expansion sets can make the game last shorter or longer. Hence, this game has a flexibility and "playability" that few others have.

Fun, Abstract, Replayable, and Attractive game
Matthew Eland from Columbus, OH USA - 5 out of 5.
Though this is technically a "board game", there isn't really a board beyond the scoring track. Instead, it's more like a puzzle where each side matches every other side but the pictures might not flow together seamlessly. I won't get into a summary of the rules since I'm sure other reviewers have covered that.Carcassonne has fairly simple gameplay that results in complicated games with many turns and a variety of strategies (i.e. Go for lots of short roads and two tile cities, build big and risk not finishing things, or devote followers early to farming to reap rewards later in the game)
My personal recommendation for learning the game or introducing new players to it is to ignore farming the first time through until everyone is comfortable with the core road / city rules, has seen all the tiles, and understands the scoring system.
Some flaws with Carcassonne: certain pieces are harder to find, typically involving curved roads and cities. This is remedied in later expansions, particularly Abbey and Mayor, but if you don't know which situations are bad it can get frustrating. Secondly, the rules are fairly vague about the interaction between the optional river start and farming. Additionally, complexity and play time skyrockets if you play with many expansions, but that's the player's fault if they choose to do that.
Overall, this is an attractive game that's fun to watch and to play. I've introduced several friends and family members to it and reactions have generally been pretty good. The replay value is astronomical and many expansions and derivatives are available.

Great game - easy to learn
Jeremy R. Ziegler from Pflugerville, TX United States - 5 out of 5.
Carcassonne is one of the best games I have ever played. It meets the two biggest criteria for a strategy game for me:1) It's easy to learn.
2) It's hard to master.
It has to be the uniquest approach I had ever come upon for a game, and I have now played it many times. It is one of those games, that it plays incredibly differently depending on the number of people who play and who you play with. All people have a different approach, and it drastically changes play.
Simply said, this game sells itself. Every person I have introduced to the game has gone on to purchase it themselves. The basic game is good, but all the expansions add a new element to the game that shouldn't be missed.

I heard that this was a good game so I bought it. It is so much fun. It isn't real difficult to play. We had played ticket to ride and enjoyed that so we went on to this. My 14 year old son loves this, it keeps your interest up and alot of the game is luck so you don't have to stress out on strategizing. Then when you get good at this, go to Settlers of Catan, thats a more time consuming strategy game. This will take less time and get you ready for Settlers of Catan. We have family game night now. I used to have to struggle to get my 14 year old off the computer, but now he begs to play this and Settlers.0 people voted this review as helpful and 0 people voted this review as unhelpful.

Carcassonne is serene, fierce, and deep strategically. It's also atmospheric.
Joshua G. Feldman from New York - 5 out of 5.
Carcasonne - a cool strategy card laying game - succeeds brilliantly because of its simplicity, strategic depth, and atmospheric beauty. Game play is simple - a river is laid out creating the start for a growing medieval world of fields, roads, rivers, monasteries, and fortified cities. These features are on the playing cards the players lay down as tiles. As the game progresses the area of tiled cards grows, painting a medieval landscape in front of you.You have a limited number of playing pieces which you use to take possession of roads, cities, monasteries, or fields for farming as you play your cards. You get points for completing these items - and whether you complete them depends on the cards you draw - and also on the choices other players make when tiling down their cards. When an item is completed you get your playing piece back and can use it to take possession of new features on the next card you lay down. Where and how you put cards down is constrained by the features of the card, and what's already been played. For example you must play a card with road on it only if there's already road - or a road terminus adjacent (no hanging roads - or cities). You work alone, but also sometimes in cooperation with other players (it's possible for two player's cities to merge in to one, then it benefits you both if you finish). Farming is complicated - but it's about controlling areas of contiguous field. Since the field areas are being created as the cards are laid down - there's an element of chance as well as strategy. The cards themselves are simple yet pretty and atmospheric. The game play is cutthroat - yet the visuals of pretty fortified medieval cities and fields, roads and streams is serene and soothing. This combination of attributes is compelling. This is a really fun game that gets the juices flowing.
As others have noted, except for farming, the rules are simple and kids can play (I'd say kids 8 and up). This game is sophisticated enough for even jaded gaming adults too. It's a great family game, and great thing to bring on weekend retreats (because it's quiet and non-electric). It's got fantastic replay value too.

Simplicity is Elegance
A. Neuhoff from California, USA - 5 out of 5.
This is a simple fun game, the turn consists of picking a tile and laying it down, then either placing a piece on the tile or not. It can be learned quickly, but there is also a lot of strategy that can go into it. It doesn't require a lot of space, a regular table-sized flat space is all, and it requires very little set-up, just divvy out the playing pieces, mix up the tiles and you're ready to go.Other reviewers have given more comprehensive descriptions of the game, so I'll just say that everyone I've played the game with has enjoyed it greatly. It is something different from the standard game fare (not that we don't enjoy the standard board/card games, but this has a refreshing novelty for us).

Pretty cool game.
Maurie A. Cain - 4 out of 5.
The game's a bit hard to learn. Easier if you're familiar with games like Settlers of Catan. Once you play a few games, you begin to see the strategy involved. I think there's a nice blend of luck-of-the-draw, and actual personal strategy to the game. I've only played with one other player, but 3 or 4 player games would be more entertaining. The cards/board is made of a pretty heavy duty paper board. The pieces are all wooden. The directions are not written that well...I think this is the main reason the game is a bit hard to learn at first. However, some of the ideas in the game are simply hard to explain with written words. Spend a little time reading the directions and you'll get the hang of it. Certainly need at least one adult to help teach the game at first.

Carcassonne
Andrew Thomas - 4 out of 5.
We bought to play this as an alternative to video games. We play as a family. It's turned out to be a great game for pre-teens through adults. The company has made some other innovative board games that are fun to play too.0 people voted this review as helpful and 0 people voted this review as unhelpful.

Carcassone - fun tile game home and away
Christine Kurjan from Palo Alto, CA USA - 5 out of 5.
I first played Carcassone with friends on a weeks-long Alp-hike. The cards were easy to backpack with and provided before-dinner fun several times a week for 3 to 5 of us. At Thanksgiving I introduced it to my dad, sister, and 15-year old nephew : it went over well with all.Carcassonne has few enough rules to make explication possible over the course of a half-hour's play. Yet the strategy subtleties and geosocial reflections continue after many hours. We even experienced interesting map development differences depending on the spirit in which the individuals played.
I enjoy it with and without the river addition, although I can't find a rule describing whether the river acts as a boundary, like roads do.
Have fun,
Christine

Fun, strategy, good for two, lovely game
Buyer Beware - 5 out of 5.
The game is truly entertaining. Are you better off as knight and build large towns, do you lurk as thief on the road or do you get locked up in a cloister? How about a life as farmer? You have to play with a strategy from the beginning, because the total score is determined at the end of the game. But Carcassonne will not stress you, like a good game of chess. It does not take long to read and learn the simple rules. The river tiles included in this package add a bit of variation. Fun even for only 2 players (maximum 5).I would suggest to make the instructions a bit more durable. A simple hardcover would do the trick. And replacing the cardboard tiles with wooden tiles can only improve the quality. I would not mind to pay a bit more for better quality.
Great game!

The rules may look intimidating at first, but this is game is easy to learn! Every game is different and it's always a challenge to come up with a game winning strategy. Oddly Compelling, and Family-Friendly
J. T. Flanik from Western WA USA - 5 out of 5.
Bias: I enjoy playing the Sim City card game. Also, I have not tried any of the expansions yet.Basically, the game is about laying down tiles that represent the French countryside, and using your set number of villagers to lay claim to elements of the Carcassonne area (county, province?). Once you complete an element (enclosed farm, road with a beginning & end, enclosed town, etc.), you get points for how big it is. Much of the fun is the puzzle-like element of choosing where your tile gets placed, to help you and/or hinder your opponent(s).
The game is easy to learn, plays rather quickly, and doesn't require the deep strategy of other games like Chess or Go. It would probably make a good 'gateway drug' for a friend/relative/significant other who isn't ready for Axis & Allies or a marathon game of Zombies!!! on game-night.
In summary, Carcassonne is a fun, relaxing little game that I could play with either my drinking buddies or my grandparents.

J. Noble from California - 4 out of 5.
This is a great game for adults and older children. My college roommates love playing it during our study breaks and my little brother also really loves playing it whenever I am home.It is easy to learn and it never gets old because the game is different every time. It is a great game for just two, but I prefer playing with more people.
If you enjoy this game I would recommend purchasing some of the expansions. I would also recommend Settler of Catan, which is another great strategy game.

Not for everyone, but I love it.
D. Shultz from Oregon - 4 out of 5.
While I agree with the others that this is a great game, quick to play, and good for most ages, I have to add that not EVERYONE will enjoy it. We gave it as a gift to a young couple and they couldn't figure it out at all. They asked several of their friends for help and even asked a child to see if they could understand how to play, and none of them could. My husband and I sat down with it and played a game within a few minutes. We think it has to do with our enjoyment of jigsaw puzzles and logic puzzles. So, while I whole-heartedly recommend this game, I would caution you that there are some people who simply won't get it, and won't even want to once they have watched you play.8 people voted this review as helpful and 0 people voted this review as unhelpful.
Carcassonne vs. Settlers of Catan Smackdown
Debbie M. from New Hope, PA United States - 5 out of 5.
We've been playing Settlers of Catan for years, a great game for ages 8-ish (with some help) and up, but too often someone (okay, I'm talking about me) ends up starting in a poorly chosen position and there really isn't any way to dig yourself out of the hole. Too frustrating to be fun.Carcassonne, on the other hand, is easier to understand for younger children and fortunes can change within a turn or two. Hope springs eternal in this game! One player may think s/he owns a city, road or farm, but suddenly another player can end up sharing it or even stealing it away. There is definitely nothing predictable about Carcassonne, even towards the very end, and we've greatly enjoyed playing it for the last few months at least every other day with different combinations of elementary, high school, college kids and adults.
Three pieces of advice --
1. Allow each player to hold two tiles at a time. Having a little more choice makes strategies much more interesting and achievable.
2. Get the Big Box. The expansion packs are definitely worth it, even if you only use the extra tiles without the additional rules/tokens.
3. Penalize mean or counterproductive play. We started giving out "yellow cards" as in soccer when a player ends up more than a lap behind (50 points) and a "red card" if more than two laps behind (100 points) since it meant the player focussed more on disrupting other players' strategies than working on their own. A red card was an automatic one game suspension and a yellow card, well, your family can decide for themselves how to adjudicate that! Good sportsmanship sometimes needs a little reinforcement, we found, especially for boys under 13 or so.

A great game for everyone
Jonathan Mccrary - 5 out of 5.
I got this game not too long ago. I have since played it with about a dozen different people and everyone one of them wants to play it again when they come over to my house. Everyone seems to enjoy it, from the super gamers who live to play games and get deeply into the strategy of it, to the casual player. Best game I have picked up in a long time. This is a great game, so I'd like to explain why I gave only 3 stars to some categories. It is not really an 'educational' toy, however I think most games that involve strategy have some lessons to teach. As for the durability... the wooden game pieces are very sturdy, the only real concern is with the tile pieces. They are a strong cardboard and should hold up fine for a long time but you'll probably need to be careful of getting them wet (don't spill your drinks at the gaming table).
Hope you enjoy this as much as I have!

Great game, easy to play, always different
J. Schrempp - 4 out of 5.
We've played this game about 10 times and each time it played out differently. It takes about 40 minutes to play out a game; there are not that many decisions to make each turn so the game can move quickly. We've played both two and four handed - it worked both ways. The counter for keeping score is a bit funky, but does not distract.4 people voted this review as helpful and 0 people voted this review as unhelpful.

As you can tell from the reviews, this game is awesome. My girlfriend and I love to play it together, as it works very well with two players. Lots of the great strategy games work well with 4-6 players, but Carcassonne manages to be great with only two as well.

Deceptively Addictive
Ronnie O. from North Smithfield, RI United States - 5 out of 5.
When I first read the description of Carcassonne, I dismissed it as something that I wouldn't really enjoy (I've never really liked how luck is the dominant element of tile-laying games). But there were so many fantastic reviews that mentioned how `strategic' it was, we decided to dig into our game fund and buy it! It was an instant hit with family and friends including my wife and daughter, who are not avid game players.I won't waste time explaining the rules or details of gameplay, but I will say that learning the game is very easy. The game plays in about a half hour (a bit more with expansions), which is great because people can come and go as they please - no long term commitments here. Even adding `The River' (included in the basic game edition that we bought) and the `Inns and Cathedrals' expansion rules isn't a burden. The only area that can be a bit confusing is scoring for farmlands. We did it incorrectly the first night, but as I was re-reading the rules to clarify it, it became clear on how they should be scored.
The mechanics of gameplay can be tinkered with to produce variations that you may like. For instance, we don't use the standard rules for placing the river tiles at the beginning of the game. We shuffle all 12 tiles, picking and laying tiles to build the river only until the two ends (the spring and the lake) have been placed. This way, the length of the river (2 to 12 tiles) varies from one game to the next.
The tile laying aspect of this game is, of course, mostly luck. There's no strategy that can give you the tile you need - you'll either be lucky or not. On one game, my son and I were both waiting to finish cities near the end of the game, needing identical pieces. He drew the tile and scored, I ended up with a zero for that city and lost the game. Had I drawn the tile, I'd have won. Of course, the more players you have, the less chance you have of getting that tile that you really need.
Placing tiles carefully is the key to strategizing. Should you build a bunch of small cities, or a lesser amount of large ones? Should you finish that road or try to build it as long as possible? Should you expand your own farms, roads, and cities, or `steal' points from another player? There is no one strategy that is fail-safe (at least none that I've found).
Strategy comes in not only in where the tiles are places, but also in the placement of your followers (`meeples') to score points for roads (as thieves), farms (farmers), cloisters (monks) and cities (knights). Since you have only a small amount of meeples, so managing them wisely is of the utmost importance. .
When it's all put together, these elements combine to make a fun and unpredictable game that is different every time you play it.
We purchased the "Inns and Cathedrals" expansion, in which Inns can double the value of roads and Cathedrals score you additional points in cities. But if those cities and roads remain unfinished at the end of the game, the whole city (or road) is worthless! This set also comes with a large follower (worth 2 regular followers) for each color, a complete set of followers for a sixth color (gray), and `50/100' tiles to make keeping score easier.
There are several other expansions for Carcassone, each adding a twist here or there, as well as increasing the number of tiles. We hope to add some of those to our collection over time, but we don't really find the game lacking anything the way it is, either. While these expansions aren't necessary to enjoy the game, the additional tiles, rules, and strategies really modify the game up nicely. There is also a `big box' available which includes the base game plus five expansions.
I recommend this game highly. While I can't say that it will replace game nights of taking out a large board game for a 2-3 hour showdown, this game stands on its' own merits, being a fine game for 2 to 5 players (six with the I & C expansion). But more importantly, it's the kind of game that can entice non-gamers into the fold, and every person that I have introduced the game to (both gamers and non-gamers alike) loves it. Carcassonne is proof that a game doesn't have to be massive or have highly technical rules to be challenging and fun.

Carcassonne
JBS from Cedar City, UT USA - 5 out of 5.
This is a tile game based in the Middle Ages when there were walled cities in Europe. Carcassonne is in southern France, but we've stayed in a similar German city -- Dinkelsbuehl. Grandpa got it for a Christmas present in 2005 and since then we've bought extension sets and played it with the adult children. Somewhere along the way, the grandchildren (ages 5-9) discovered this was a game they could play with the adults and so we gave the game to two families this Christmas. The grandkids love playing with the grown-ups and don't have to understand the strategy in order to enjoy playing and sometimes to win. The game goes faster than others we play like Settlers of Catan and Rail Baron.4 people voted this review as helpful and 0 people voted this review as unhelpful.
Meeple Strategy
Joseph D. Remy - 5 out of 5.
Carcassonne is an excellent game that is not only simple and fun to play, but chock full of strategy and planning. The game is great for family and friends, and simple enough to teach to the kids. It takes about an hour to play, so it's good for that after dinner game, or whenever you don't have multiple hours to play. That said, the game is fun and diverse enough to play several games back to back when you do have several hours at hand.
As simple as the game appears, there's a lot of strategy that can get involved in the placement of your Meeples. You can spend the game trying to look like you're working on your own territory, hoping the other players don't notice you trying to rob them of their end-game points. There is a bit of luck that comes into play, and it can wreck your genius strategy, but that's the fun of the game.
I highly recommend this game to any board gamer, to anyone thinking of playing board games, or to any gamer trying to recruit friends and family into the joys of non-electronic games.

This is a really fun game!
Atomicwasteland from North Bethesda, MD USA - 5 out of 5.
I am glad that I bought this game. It does not involve any money or any pen and paper (which is rather unusual!) Scoring is done by moving people around a 50 point track, and if you lap it, you get a 50 point card in addition to whatever else you have on the point track. This keeps the focus on the game-play, while still allowing for a point reference throughout the game. The pieces (and the box) are of high quality, and the game can be enjoyed by children as well as adults.
Another reason I like this game is that two players can play this game alone, and sometimes it is hard to find games like that. You typically have two owners of a game and a third person (a friend?) who comes over and plays less often and is always at a disadvantage.
Also, the game doesn't last too long. You are not going to get bogged down for hours, and you can "get a game in" before you go to bed, or before you go out.
If you enjoy this game, there are some expansion sets to this game that you can also purchase. They each add additional pieces and additional rules, and they change the strategy and make it more interesting (just when you might have been getting tired with the game!)
They are the following:
Carcassonne Inns & Cathedrals
Carcassonne Traders & Builders
Carcassonne The Princess and the Dragon
Carcassonne The Tower
Carcassonne The River (sort of a mini-expansion)
If, however, you think you would like to purchase them all at once, instead of one by one down the road, you can elect to purchase the "Carcassonne: Big Box" instead. This contains the full original game as well all of the expansions listed above. It is bundled together at a big discount, and as well as with a big space savings -no extra boxes lying around.
In addition, if you enjoy Carcassonne, you can also purchase separate standalone games related to Carcassonne, but which are NOT expansions, and which cannot be played as part of the original game (or any of the expansions listed above).
They are the following:
Carcassonne Hunters & Gatherers
Carcassonne The Castle
Carcassonne The City
Carcassonne The Ark of the Covenant
Finally, for those who enjoyed this game, I must also recommend other strategy games from the manufacturer, Rio Grande Games. I have also purchased the strategy card games "Lost Cities" and "San Juan" from this manufacturer, and have enjoyed them immensely as well!

Love it. When a friend explained it to my husband and I...we thought "how lame", but once we played it...we loved it! It's easy but also strategic (but not nerdy strategic). Even my 8 year old nephew loved it. Seriously, you just need to try it out. We must have played it a dozen times over the Christmas holiday. Great to get a gang together and do a little thinking and have some fun.2 people voted this review as helpful and 0 people voted this review as unhelpful.

TDPM from USA - 5 out of 5.
My family and I all love board games and bought this after reading the great reviews. It lived up to all expectations. My husband read the instructions and easily explained the game to us. Strategies are quickly realized but are varied. The game is different every time and can be played in under an hour. This game comes with the free "river" expansion pack so you can play with or without. I like with the river better.
The game is most fun with two players, but we've played with up to four and still had a good time. Strategy changes with more people.

Carcassonne -- simple brilliance
skyline from USA - 5 out of 5.
To play Carcassonne, you select a tile at random and join it to an existing tile on the table and then decide whether or not you want to claim an object on the just-placed tile. Points are scored during play when a claimed object is completed, such as finishing a wall around a city or creating a road with an intersection (or termination) at both of its ends. There is end-game scoring as well.Carcassonne is collaborative; players collectively build a unique landscape of cities, meadows, and roads. It is combative; with clever tile placement, a player can put a halt to an opponent's building project or share in the spoils by `sneaking' in on an opponent's city, road or meadow. Carcassonne is balanced, appearing to be almost equal parts chance, tactics and strategy.
An experienced Carcassonne player will probably beat a newbie most of the time, if not every time. Experienced players (especially one on one) can have a nearly chess-like match of tactical and strategical combat.
Strategy and tactics change with the number of players because the tiles available to each player diminishes as the number of players increases. It's probably best not to make grandiose plans when playing a five player game.
The farming element of Carcassonne is perhaps the game's only weakness. I say 'perhaps' because the farms are also what help make Carcassonne such a strategical and tactical success. The main `problem' with the farming element is the tendency for a large central farm. Players have to be especially alert for the little patches of green that extend the farm. Players may not want to get too carried away trying to own or join the big farm or they'll lose too many meeples and miss other opportunities. And yet, that struggle over the central farm can often be why Carcassonne is so agonizingly fun. End game scoring is critical, so take your time and make sure you've got the farms and farmers properly identified.
There are two important things to note regarding the basic original Carcassonne: First, do a search on the Internet for the English interpretation of the German third edition rules regarding farm scoring. I prefer these newer rules to the one included in the English version (which has not been updated). Second, in games with three or more players, consider playing the variant which allows you to draw a tile after your turn is over so you can study it while the other players place their tiles. This helps reduce the dreaded `analysis paralysis' and makes the game more interesting when it is not your turn.
I have played maybe 10-15 times with varying numbers of players and have read other opinions and tips on the Internet. This review reflects some of my observations and knowledge so far. I recently acquired the `Traders and Builders' expansion and I think it's safe to say after one play that it is a must-have. T&B adds a new level of strategy and tactics without making the game overly complicated. It adds a richness to the game that seems to make it better, which is pretty amazing.
Nit Picky Things:
(1) You need a cloth bag to draw the tiles from and there is not one included in the original game, but there is one included with the T&B expansion.
(2) Forget the scoring card that comes with the game. One accidental bump and the meeples slide off their score markers. Unless you somehow managed to memorize everyone's score, or remember every object that has been claimed and by whom, you'll have to start over. Just use a paper and pencil.
(3) The scoring meeple should have been different than the seven playing meeples. It's too easy for people to wind up playing with eight meeples instead of seven.
(4) The farming and two-tile city scoring rules have different official versions and can be confusing, especially to newcomers.
(5) There may be one too many cloisters!
(6) Two-tile cities are easy, maybe too easy, and can quickly fatten up a farmer as well as provide an instant boost to the score, all without a loss in meeples (provided you have a meeple in hand to score with).

K. Goddard from Alabama - 5 out of 5.
After playing Settlers of Catan for a while we began looking at Carcasssonne. This game is perfect for the traveling family. An average size box that fits easily in luggage and an assemble as you go board that can be construsted with minimal floor space. You have five different "meople" (the little wooden men). Each player has a different color. They represent your accountant (score keeper), knight, theif, farmer and monk. The farmer scoring can be difficult for younger children but the concept of them is easy to explain. They grow the food for the nearest city. Choose to leave them out if you wish. I would also consider changing the name of the theif to: Adventurer or travler. The idea is to build your own countryside scattered with castles and earn points doing so. The game is quick and different each time due to the ever changing board lay out with each shuffle. Strategy is helpful but occasionally dumb luck will win out. I recommend it and it'sexpansions.

This game has it all and I highly recommend it. The game is about building the town and deploying your followers to get you points. Since you build the board as you play, there is very little set-up time needed. Also the game is easy enough for anyone to pick-up, but there is a complexity to it which keeps you playing over and over. Lastly, it isn't a marathon game like monopoly or risk, which is nice.7 people voted this review as helpful and 0 people voted this review as unhelpful.
Claim the Country
Joshua Koppel from Chicago, IL United States - 4 out of 5.
This is a tile-placement game. Square tiles have roads, monasteries, cities and farmland printed on them. Each player in turn reveals a tile and places it such that all edges match edges already placed. For instance, a road has to connect to a road, it can not just stop. Once a player places a tile, they can claim part of the tile (road, farmland, city, or monastery). As these features grow the player gets more points. Monasteries do not grow, points are gained by filling in the nine surrounding spaces. The skill comes from knowing just what to claim. Each player has a limited number of claim tokens. Once a feature is completed (road, city or monastery), the points are collected and the claim token becomes available for use again. Players must balance their use of the tokens and work to complete features so they can claim even more. One trick is to complete a short road or small city (just two tiles, sometimes three) and then claim it, thus getting the points and getting the claim token back immediately.
This is a quick game. Playing time is relatively short (thirty minutes or so) and play is easy. No two games are ever the same thus keeping the game fresh. A fun game for two to six players. The game is reasonably small and easy to transport. Pieces are cardboard tiles and wooden claim tokens. If you are looking for a fun game that doesn't take hours, then this one might be for you.

This game is always interesting because the board is different every time, creating an atmosphere where players have to adapt their strategy according to the pieces they choose. I love how table talk is encouraged and how older kids can pick up on this game and play with adults. It's also great because you can play an intense 2 player game that is just as fun as playing with a group.0 people voted this review as helpful and 0 people voted this review as unhelpful.
A Tile- Laying Game About a Real French City
C. Sligh from Winston-Salem, NC United States - 5 out of 5.
Carcassonne starts with each player choosing the color they want their "Followers" (little wooden pawns) to be. After everyone has recieved their Followers, the "starting" tile is then placed on the center of the table. Next, the youngest player chooses a tile from the pile. He/She then places that tile adjacent to the starting tile (it must agree with the bordering terrain; for example Castle=Castle or Field, Road=Road, Cloister=Field or Road). To profit off that tile after it is complete (road a complete circuit, castle boxed in by walls, cloister completely surrounded) you will deploy a Follower on to that tile ONLY when you place it. A monk goes in a cloister, a knight in a castle, a farmer in a field, and a thief on the road. In the end you score, a very complicated process.A very beautiful game. I love it!

A great game - simple to learn with deep strategy
M. Swanson from Bellingham, WA - 4 out of 5.
I get together at least twice a month on weekends with a number of friends to sit around a table and play board games. We usually played Settlers of Catan until I picked up Carcassone after I received a number of recommendations for it, and I'm very glad I did. It is a compelling and fun game for two players, and becomes even more fun with more participants involved. it is an incredibly simple game to play - we had a few observers watching a game once that had picked up the basics of it and were offering advide halfway through, just by observing how we played.I enjoy that it is not dice-based, but does have an element of luck in how the tiles are drawn, but allows for a number of stragies to be employed when it comes to tile placement and advancement. It has since become a regular addition to our gaming pool.
I highly recommend picking up the Inns and Cathedrals expansion, as it does add a good level of gameplay mechanics without detracting from the original game or adding too many extraneous rules.
Overall, a very fun and simple game, appropriate for children and adults alike.

Joy Hummer from San Jose, CA - 5 out of 5.
I played this game with my son and his family during Christmas in Prague. The directions were in Czech so I waited to get home before shopping for it. It's absolutely in every store I went into in Europe. A cross between monopoly and Maze, it's a great game for two people or more.I'm usually a card player and not a board game person but this was challenging. After many, many hours of play, there were still strategies to be learned. I think with the expansions this game could become an intriguing game that requires tremendous concentration and interestingly also fun for the others who don't take games seriously. It may have been the situation but we played the game nearly every night for about 10 days and I didn't get tired of it. My grandchildren loved it.

My husband and I really enjoy this game -- most games that say they are for 2 or more players actually aren't very fun for just two players. This one is great! We really enjoy it. And when more people join in the individual strategies change a little, but it's still a really great game. We consider ourselves gamers, and this game is the best two person game we've found.1 people voted this review as helpful and 0 people voted this review as unhelpful.
A Great Game
T. Hooper from Osaka, Japan - 5 out of 5.
Carassconne is one of the best board games available. First of all, it is very simple to learn. This is one of the few games in my collection that I can play when my non-gamer friends come over. It just takes a minute to explain and after the first game, I find that most people can pick it up. It has a high replay value as well because each game will turn out differently. No two game boards turn out the same. This is thanks to the very interesting tile laying game mechanic. If you're only familiar with American-style board games like Monopoly or Risk, do yourself a favor and pick this up. You'll see that there is a whole new way to think about boardgaming.

Disappointed

I read the reviews and I was ready for a fun game...the truth is we only played it once, it was Ok...but nothing like the fun the other reviewers experienced! Maybe after you play it several times and get into the strategy it gets more fun, but it is rather dull really. Prefer Settlers of Catan for example a lot more (maybe it is because there isn't much interaction with the other players) that I found it dull.10 people voted this review as helpful and 20 people voted this review as unhelpful.

This game will keep you hooked for a loooooooooooong time. I got it to play with my 70 year old cousin, who loves it as much as I do. It encourages thinking, strategy, and history, so is educational too, without being a real booring, intentionally educational feel. You place tiles to build different castles, monastaries, roads, and farms. Then you place 1 of your 8 follower peices on the structures to rack up points. Each structure has a seperate scoring method. The game is a whole lot simpler than it sounds, though. Easy to grasp, harder to master. Buy it, its sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo worth it! Parents, grandparents, and children alike will love it. 5 stars out of five, absolutely! I bought it a year ago and it is still fresh and new every game. A winner! :)2 people voted this review as helpful and 1 people voted this review as unhelpful.

Must have Eurogame
Aaron L. Shaw from Provo, UT USA - 5 out of 5.
THis is much better than settlers. Much easier to explain, and much shorter game. Plus if you play with the varient of allowing each player to hold three tiles at a time, the strategy is 3 times as deep as settlers. Great gateway game for non-boardgamers. Ticket to ride is better for this, but this is truley one of the great games. We have had this game now for about 5 years. My wife will not let me get rid of it!2 people voted this review as helpful and 3 people voted this review as unhelpful.
Easy to pick up, hard to master
J. McAulay - 5 out of 5.
This is a great game. Easy to learn, and tough to master. My in-laws picked it up within minutes and we still play it revising strategies each time through. My only beef (but conversely the reason my wife loves it) is the randomness. You choose a random tile each turn so it's very hard to plan ahead. For that reason I prefer Settlers of Catan, but this is my runner up bar none.

Carcassonne is a great game with a medieval theme. Players deploy knights, thieves, farmers, and monks onto tiles containing cities, roads, fields, and cloisters. The tiles build onto one another to create a land that is unique to each game session. Explaining how to play it makes it sound more difficult than it actually is, but once you get going, it's not that hard. A bit of strategy is involved, but a bit of luck is as well. This game is fun for all ages!3 people voted this review as helpful and 0 people voted this review as unhelpful.
Grab a ziplock and you are ready to play!
C. Ransdell from California, USA - 5 out of 5.
Carcassonne is one of the family favorites! Carcassonne usually ends up as the game of choice at family gatherings (with Puerto Rico, Corsairs, and Settlers as back ups). The rules are easy to pick up, as we usually just show a couple of pieces and explain the game as we go for new players. Strategies have developed to pick on the perceived 'leader', box in your 'favorite' players piece on impossible pieces to finish, defensive meadow closings, etc. This game is great for replay. The 'luck' of what you draw can be overcome with repeated play.
This game (with Corsairs) is one of our favorites to bring camping, traveling, or backpacking. Grab a ziplock, pen and paper and your off!

One of the Best Games Out There
Christine Biancheria from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania United States - 5 out of 5.
This, along with Ticket to Ride, is just an excellent game. It's very different from the usual, and it's very fun and endlessly replayable because you build the board each time. It comes with a nice clear set of rules and there are several wonderful expansion sets that can be added in for spice. I've never gone wrong with this game as a gift; it seems to be universally popular. Another must-buy. Thanks Amazon for carrying this one!5 people voted this review as helpful and 0 people voted this review as unhelpful.
a fun game for adults!
M. Barretta from Centreville, VA - 5 out of 5.
I bought this game as a gift for some friends so that we'd have something other than Trivial Persuit to play on game night. Now, game night seems to come along much more often. The game is a tile based game where you build your world via laid tiles, turn by turn. Each tile contains some feature like a road, a piece of a city, farm land, or a combination of all. Each player has a given number of pieces to place on these tiles inorder to gain points. For example, if you place a piece on a road, you get one point per tile for the length of the road (there are intersections and city walls to end roads).
There is a remarkable amount of strategy and tactics you can get into if you want to, or you can just play a simple brainless (winefull) game.
Overall, I'm very happy with this new game and I'll be buying more along the same lines (like Ticket to Ride and Settlers of Catan)

Even our 6 year old likes it
Bill Huebsch from Virginia - 4 out of 5.
This is one of those games that's easy to learn the rules to but cannot really be mastered. You just draw tiles and place them where they fit in order to build cities and roads. Simple eh? Of course if you want to win you have to make sure your opponent does't steal that city you worked so hard to build. Oh, and don't neglect the farmers or your opponent's score will go shooting past yours when the last tile is placed. As the game progresses your choices of what to do widen and it is easy to get distracted from that perfect strategy you started out with.I have not played with more than three players so I do not know how well the game scales. Even playing with three players rather than two made quite a difference as it slowed the progress you could make on your constructions, making each tile's placement more important.
Our six year old understands the basics well enough to play reasonably well without too much help (although we do not play the farmers in order to simplify things a bit).
The game has an element of luck in that if you keep drawing the "wrong" tiles while you opponent draws the "right" ones you are in trouble. This may frustrate folks to some extent but the luck factor still feels much smaller than most dice based games. And there are still plenty of ways to score points, including "stealing" your opponents' almost completed cities and roads.
If you have a need to play but cannot find a flesh and blood opponent you can play online for free here:

Great fun

This is a great game. If your paragon of boardgames is still Monopoly, then you are in for a pleasant surprise. Far superior games are now available. There is a quiet revolution in boardgaming happening right now.Carcassonne is one of the best of these new games. My wife and I love this game. Also check out the expansion to this game, Carcassonne: Inns & Cathedrals. It adds a lot too.
Hint: For more strategic depth, play from two or three tiles in your hand, instead of just choosing one randomly each turn.
If you like this game, also check out these others, which are also listed on Amazon:

Where has this game been?
Jadecat from Lake Orion, MI United States - 5 out of 5.
Okay, so the game has been around for awhile, I was just looking in the wrong places. I don't remember how I was led to this game, I was looking at a game site on the Web and they said how this game is consistently rated #1. So I clicked on it, and in a carefree mood I purchased it. I LOVE IT. Even my husband who usually rolls his eyes when a game is pulled out , has said he enjoys this game. We often play it with a 9 and 11 year old, and they are easily able to grasp the concepts, although their strategies could use some work. What is so nice about this game is that there are no dice, no money to count and no constantly moving a piece around a board. Instead each player on his turn picks a cardboard tile(nice thick quality) and places it on the table, which acts as your board. You basically create your own puzzle each game, so it is never the same. Rivers match up to rivers, or city to city, road to road. You have to decide the best place to put the piece you just picked.
Sometimes the games are lopsided, with one person building a huge city and getting tons of points, but that is often due to the other players error and not a game fault. We have only been playing it 2 weeks, but so far I have learned/figured out something new after each game to help with future strategies. It's a quick game, and high quality. I have been so impressed with this one, that I have already purchased some expansions and Rio Grandes new game of Ark of the Covenant and Hunters and Gatherers, both using the same concept of Carcassonne but with variations.
This game definitely beats out the common store favorites of Clue, Monopoly, Life, Stratego and blah blah blah. There is a reason why it has been a #1 game, try it out!

If you loved Settlers of Catan this a must!
K. Sampanthar from Boston, MA - 5 out of 5.
Most people come to this game after they have already been introduced to the European Designer Games by Settlers of Catan. This is a different kind of game than Settlers but in some senses it shares a lot of commonalities. The game is easy to learn for a wide audience, it is reasonably quick to play (30 - 40 minutes) and is a very "immersive" game i.e. there aren't long periods of boredom. There are elements of strategy and luck, which makes for a "fun" game experience.
This game is fun for children and adults. For children the "farmers" are a little too complex, but the game works very well without that element.
The game consists of laying tiles to build cities, roads and monasteries in the South of France. Points are gained by creating long roads, building large cities or farming multiple farms. It draws elements of building jigsaw puzzles together with a strategy game of competing for territory.
I have played this game with family members who aren't really into board games and they enjoyed it just as much as gamers.
There are many expansions to this game which add a few more dimensions as you get more advanced. There is a very high replay-ability.
I would high recommend this game to people who are bored with standard Monopoly or Cranium type board games that are popular in the US.
If you loved Settler's of Catan this a "must"!

Strategy, planning, and resource management!
Rick Douglas Janssen from Lake Zurich, IL USA - 5 out of 5.
This is a great game of kingdom building that is easy to learn and very fun to play. The games are relatively short (30 to 45 minutes)so it doesn't take an entire evening, either.Players take turns drawing land tiles and placing them on the board. Tiles have various structures (e.g. roads, cities, fields) on them that need to be matched up for proper placement. You can't have a road end in an open field, it must be attached to another road.
Each player has a number of followers to dispatch throughout the kingdom. They can be placed on roads (to become thieves), cities (to become knights), monistaries (to become monks), or fields (to become farmers). Once a structure is completed (roads have two ending points or intersections, cities are completely walled in, etc.) the player scores points for his follower and may remove to follower from the board to place him on a subsequent round.
This game is a good way to learn resource management. If you place all of your followers you won't have any in reserve for a prime opportunity, should it arise later. Is it better to get quick points with roads or small cities, or try to keep extending the roads and cities for greater scores? There are many strategies to consider and options to contemplate. Yet, this game is easy to learn in a few minutes. And since the players place the board pieces there are no two game boards alike.
My friends and I have had hours of entertainment from this game. I highly recommend it!

Carcassonne - the best game in years
PhatPat from Lebanon, OH USA - 5 out of 5.
Carcassonne is the best strategy-based board game I've ever played. It's actually composed of about a hundred square tiles featuring roads, cities, farmland, and cloisters. Deploy your small number of settlers to take over each of these features, scoring points for their completion. Score points for your farmers and all your incomplete roads, cities, and cloisters in the end.The game works great for two players as well as the maximum 5 players (six with the first expansion) or anywhere in between. The games are varied every time I've played (about 30-40 times so far).
This game is the most addicting game I've played since Magic: the Gathering was released 10 years ago. Try it and soon you will be scrambling to purchase the two available expansions - one with Big Settlers and new tiles and one with Builders & Traders.
The average rating for the durability is a result of the cardboard tiles. If you play a game enough times you'll likely wear out anything made of cardboard over time.

a really fun, easy game

i first played this game a few months ago. 10 minutes into the game, i was hooked! the concept is simple -- earn points by completing cities, roads, and cloisters, and deploying farmers. figuring out the best tile placement is tricky, but fun. the competition is fun, but not too intense. even my 10-year old daughter plays this, and likes it. if we want a "quick" game, we leave out the "farmer" aspect -- makes for a quicker, easier, but still very fun game. the tiles themselves are just beautiful -- the artwork is gorgeous. the player pieces are great -- wooden man figures that are a nice size -- substantial, and the fact that they are person-shaped and not just a block square, adds to the fun. i'd play this game several times a day if i could-- it really is that much fun. :)11 people voted this review as helpful and 0 people voted this review as unhelpful.
